French Line: The highly popular brochure, "Sail the Left Bank on the SS FRANCE (the class others call Tourist)." The twenty-four page brochure showcases Tourist Class interiors on the FRANCE. The ship's decor was often criticized as too severely modern. After browsing through this brochure, I disagree.Opening photos show happy alcohol-swigging passengers and a couple alone on Promenade Deck, then the brochure turns to the Versailles Restaurant. A photo shows tables set with items I would love to swipe: CGT silverware, crystal glassware, starched linens, Limoges china, and even hefty chromed plated table numbers.
A page later five cabins are featured. Lots of orange upholstery and green bedspreads. One of my favorite rooms is the Rive Gauche Lounge which is full of color and motion. By comparison, the St. Tropez Lounge looks like a bus station waiting room. Another handsome space is the Library and Writing Room which contained airplane-style seats interlocked with glass-covered mahogany tables. High intensity adjustable lights, so popular in the 60s, are mounted on the tables.
The Teen Age Club features red carpeting, pink walls, and a purple soda fountain. Much more sophisticated are the Jean Mercier murals lining the walls of the Children's Playroom. I understand they sold for a fortune when the ship was broken up.
The glittering auditorium is showcased in views looking both towards the stage and back towards the balcony, I remember sitting in the left corner of the balcony late in the day of September 11, 2001, and listening to a moving memorial service. Other photos show the swimming pool, deck scenes, Galeries Lafayette Boutique, and bakery.
Excellent condition.
